My introduction to architecture in Portland turned out to be a two-year engagement in California, working on the Graduate School of Business at Stanford University. The 415,000 square foot complex is certified LEED Platinum, achieving a projected energy savings of 40% better than code standards through the use of solar photovoltaic panels, lighting controls integrated with daylighting, and night flushing, among other strategies. The early focus of my involvement on this project was on the four-story Bass Center, with its elliptical stair rising through a central light-filled atrium. During construction administration, my scope of work extended to all eight buildings in the complex along with the extensive site work and landscaping.
